A new interactive simulation created by reveals what the internet could be like in ten years.
Net neutrality is the principle that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should treat all data passing through the internet equally. In 2015, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) enshrined this in law.
In theory, this prevents ISPs throttling certain websites or prioritising websites that pay for special treatment. But in 2017, the FCC had the principle repealed to force more investment in broadband infrastructure.
There is concern at the level of control this gives ISPs over consumers鈥� internet usage, especially as many Americans only have one or two realistic broadband options.
Although this is currently an internal US debate, there could be major repercussions for the rest of the world.
If the worst comes to the worst, the internet as we know it could be very different.
That鈥檚 where the simulation comes in. We鈥檝e taken the most insidious ways the internet could change and dialled it up to eleven.
The simulation includes:
A biased news site written by sinister AI robots.
A social media platform that lets you pay to read private messages you鈥檙e mentioned in and stalk your friends.
An online store offering drone delivery and super aggressive sales tactics
