More than eight inten(81%) Britٰܲithe deciding factor on their purchasing journey,more than three quarter(76%)admit they lack trustin theirDzԱe banking,according to new research.
More and more banks are providing services online, withSantander recently announcing the closure of 111 physical branchesand NatWest planning an overhaul of their core retail banking businessto fight off fintech rivals through the promotion of their digital channels.

Shift to Digital

Although this shift towards online banking may appearseamless, arecent study from anti-money laundering specialists,SmartSearchfound thatonly a third (34%) of Brittrusttheir online banking service to be completely safe,whichnearly halvesto just 18% when it comes to banks handling large sums of money online.
Furthermore,recent news suggestsone of the most established high street banks in the UK,NatWest,ifacinga high courtcriminal case over money laundering, inafurther blow tothehigh street staples as they work tobuild up trust withthepublic to conduct theirbusiness online.
Thewell-knownbankhasbeen cited by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) over depositmade over afive-yearperiod between 2011-2016, totalling £365 million5, with allegations that NatWest’s systems and controls have failed to monitor this activitydiligently enough, which could result in an unlimited fine and even criminal convictions.

This has highlighted the potential shortcomings of banks in their due diligence inpolicing the movement of money and is extremely damagingfor not just NatWest’s reputation,but the reputation of the entire banking sector when itcometo earning the trust of customers.
