Founded by Elon Musk in 2016 as part of an effort to combat big-city traffic problems, The Boring Company (TBC) is an infrastructure and tunnel construction company.
In true Elon fashion, it all started with a Tweet, fueled by frustration and accidental ingenuity. Expressing his frustration with Los Angeles traffic, Musk proposed a solution in the form of a 鈥渢unnel boring machine鈥 that would provide alternative route options in big cities, ultimately diluting and reducing traffic.
Even the company name was proposed in the initial set of Tweets, and it wasn鈥檛 long before Musk had refined TBC鈥檚 mission 鈥 to alleviate congestion and completely revolutionise the city鈥檚 transportation system by means of methods that are sustainable, efficient and cost-effective.
Beyond merely easing traffic-related frustration, the aim of TBC went far beyond reducing congestion. The bigger picture revolved around making use of cutting-edge engineering to create subterranean systems that are simultaneously discreet and transformative, supporting growing cities without disrupting day-to-day life.

Why the Focus on Tunnels?

One of TBC鈥檚 most notable projects is the Vegas Loop, a network of underground tunnels designed to revolutionise public transport in Las Vegas, one of the country鈥檚 (and the world鈥檚) busiest cities.
This high-capacity system aims to move passengers quickly and efficiently between key destinations, including the Las Vegas Convention Center, Allegiant Stadium and even Las Vegas鈥 McCarran International Airport.
The Vegas Loop is currently operational at certain sections, and even its partial completion demonstrates the great potential of underground transport to offer a high-speed, low-cost alternative to traditional methods.
Indeed, when fully implemented, the system is projected to transport up to 90,000 passengers per hour, reducing both travel times and surface-level congestion. Of course, all of this without causing massive disruptions during the construction process.

Prufrock is capable of beginning its work within 48 hours of arriving on-site, eliminating the need for extensive excavation pits. It can tunnel at speeds exceeding one mile per week, making it significantly faster than traditional machines.
By employing a 鈥減orpoising鈥 method, during which the machine launches and resurfaces independently, TBC has redefined what is possible in the realm of underground construction, completely changing the game.
This speed and efficiency are complemented by other innovations, including continuous mining (where tunnel lining is installed simultaneously during excavation) and the use of all-electric equipment to minimise environmental impact, contributing to TBC鈥檚 commitment to sustainable construction.
