While Summit Group is best known as Bangladesh鈥檚 largest independent power producer, the conglomerate has systematically diversified beyond electricity generation into multiple infrastructure sectors. This expansion has positioned Summit as a comprehensive infrastructure player addressing Bangladesh鈥檚 development needs across several critical domains.

鈥淥ur businesses are in physical infrastructure, ports, fibre optics and electricity generation,鈥� explains Muhammed Aziz Khan, founder and chairman of Summit Group.听

The company鈥檚 growth beyond power generation has been deliberate. Through investments in port facilities, nationwide telecommunications networks, and liquefied natural gas infrastructure, Summit Group has positioned itself to address several of Bangladesh鈥檚 critical infrastructure gaps.

Summit Group鈥檚 Port Infrastructure Development

Summit Alliance Port Limited (SAPL), established in 2003 as a joint venture between Summit Group and Alliance Holdings Limited, has grown to become Bangladesh鈥檚 leading provider of off-dock port services. The company handles a substantial portion of Bangladesh鈥檚 containerised cargo, with operations in Chittagong Port and inland terminals.

SAPL manages more than a quarter of all containerised export shipments and around 15% of Bangladesh鈥檚 total containerised imports.听

Beyond domestic operations, Summit became the first Bangladeshi company to operate port facilities outside the country. In 2018, SAPL鈥檚 subsidiary Summit Alliance Port East Gateway (India) won a contract to operate three river terminals in India: two in Kolkata and one in Patna. This marked the first Public-Private Partnership between a Bangladeshi company and the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

Summit established Bangladesh鈥檚 first privately operated off-dock port facility, originally named Ocean Containers Ltd and now operating as Summit Alliance Ports Ltd, which manages roughly and about 10% of its import cargo.

Telecommunications and Fibre Optic Networks

Summit Communications Ltd has deployed the most extensive fibre optic network in Bangladesh, connecting population centers and providing backbone infrastructure for internet and telecommunications services.

According to the company鈥檚 website, Summit Communications has built 鈥渁ccess to over 57,000 KM nationwide network connecting all 64 districts, 495 upazillas and more than 3,650 government offices, serving all the mobile phone operators, major ISPs and call centers all over the country.鈥澨�

鈥淪ummit Communications, the first company to lay a nationwide telecommunication transmission network, covers 70 percent of Bangladesh and connects Bangladesh to India and Myanmar through terrestrial fibre,鈥� said Muhammed Aziz Khan.听

In 2023, Summit Towers acquired 2,012 telecom towers from Banglalink, a major mobile operator in Bangladesh, in a deal worth approximately $100 million. Through this acquisition, Summit strengthened its position in the telecommunications infrastructure sector, with Banglalink leasing back the use of these towers for at least 12 years.

Liquefied Natural Gas Operations

Summit Group鈥檚 move into liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure marked another significant diversification, establishing the company as a key player in Bangladesh鈥檚 gas supply chain. Summit recently completed construction of Bangladesh鈥檚 second floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) terminal.

The terminal, which began operations in April 2019, significantly increased Bangladesh鈥檚 natural gas supply capacity. According to Excelerate Energy, which provides the FSRU vessel for the terminal, the facility has 鈥渁 send-out capacity of 500 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) of natural gas鈥� and has increased Bangladesh鈥檚 鈥渢otal natural gas supply by 25 percent.鈥�
