After first introducing their AI DJ feature in 2023, Spotify has rolled out a Spanish DJ with a new voice model. Spotify DJ began its release with an English version last year, and shortly after, expanded to the UK. By August 2023, the feature became available around the world.
The first AI voice model was created with Xavier “X” Jernigan, Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships. His voice was a hit among users, and as a result created a loyal following. For the Spanish version, Olivia 鈥淟ivi鈥 Quiroz Roa, a Senior Music Editor based in Mexico City, was chosen. Her voice was selected for its relatability and friendly tone.
Spotify AI DJ’s Features And AI Technology
The AI DJ uses Spotify’s already existing tech that personalises playlists to curate music that aligns with each listener’s music taste, together with commentary about the tracks and artists. Spotify explains, “It will sort through the latest music and look back at some of your old favourites鈥攎aybe even resurfacing that song you haven鈥檛 listened to for years. It will then review what you might enjoy and deliver a stream of songs picked just for you. And what鈥檚 more, it constantly refreshes the lineup based on your feedback.
“If you鈥檙e not feeling the vibe, just tap the DJ button and it will switch it up. The more you listen and tell the DJ what you like (and don鈥檛 like!), the better its recommendations get. Think of it as the very best of Spotify鈥檚 personalisation鈥攂ut as an AI DJ in your pocket.”
Spotify uses OpenAI tech to pull details on the songs and artists playing. With their AI voice, Spotify has partnered with Sonantic, a platform that uses AI to turn text into speech.

How Are Listeners Responding So Far?
Users who listen to the AI DJ tend to spend more time on Spotify. According to the streaming platform, DJ listeners spend 25% of their listening time with the DJ feature on days they use it. More than half of first-time listeners return to the DJ the very next day. The average DJ listener spends more time listening to the DJ than to any other recommended set.
“We鈥檝e found that when DJ listeners hear commentary alongside personal music recommendations, they鈥檙e more willing to try something new (or listen to a song they may have otherwise skipped),” Spotify shares.
The feature has been especially popular among Gen Z and Millennials, who make up 87% of DJ users. The demand for the AI DJ was high in the U.K. and Ireland, which is why their social media requests brought the AI DJ to the UK.
How Do Users Enjoy The AI DJ?
To access the DJ, users can go to their Music Feed on the Spotify mobile app and tap the DJ card. They can switch between English, and now Spanish by tapping the three-dot menu within the DJ card.
“We have millions of Spanish-speaking listeners on Spotify, many of whom have been taking to social media to ask about DJ. In fact, over the last few months, we鈥檝e seen an over 215% increase in social conversation around DJ in Spanish. Rolling out DJ in Spanish was a natural next step in the evolution of the product, and we鈥檙e excited for the world to meet Livi, the voice of DJ in Spanish,” they announced.
