In the past, Westminster has struggled with some of the worst connectivity in London and, to remedy this, the Council has been working over the past few years to improve connectivity for our residents and businesses.
Westminster has succeeded in dramatically increasing the number of properties with full fibre availability, and, in a period of 4 months from September 2019 to January 2020 delivered connectivity to an additional 12,932 properties, three times the rate than any other London borough. This exponential growth has allowed Westminster to climb the ranks to become the second best borough across the whole of London for full fibre availability.
Cllr Matthew Green, Westminster City Council Member for Business and Planning said:
鈥淚t鈥檚 a fantastic achievement that Westminster City Council has managed to roll out fibre broadband at such an incredible rate. In the current climate, it鈥檚 more important than ever that our residents and businesses can stay connected and continue to work. Moreover, a significant proportion of distance working, learning and shopping will continue after the pandemic has passed, and therefore this improvement in infrastructure will allow all our residents to stay connected.鈥�

Cllr Paul Swaddle, Westminster City Council Member for Community Services and Digital said: 鈥淥ur connectivity initiative has proven to be timely as we ramped up the fibre roll-out leading up to early 2020 before lockdown measures were implemented in response to the pandemic. It鈥檚 very important that our most vulnerable residents have the ability to stay connected to access the assistance they require, online food deliveries, and for our children to continue to learn online. I鈥檓 proud to say that as part of the initiative we have been able to ensure more vulnerable residents have connectivity, and have supplied our most vulnerable families with laptops to assist with education, work, and groceries.鈥�
From September 2019 to January 2020 Westminster have climbed to the rank of 2nd聽 best borough in London, and 16th in the UK, for full fibre connectivity.
