According to an article on , the debut of the prototype robot forms part of Mr Musk鈥檚 bid to position Tesla as a leader in fields such as artificial intelligence and not just a company that makes 鈥渃ool cars鈥.

On Friday, a test robot turned and waved to a crowd, who cheered as it walked towards them.

The company also showed a video of it doing simple tasks, showcasing its practical abilities.

But a more streamlined current model, which Mr Musk dubbed 鈥極ptimus鈥 was wheeled out to the audience to show a closer prototype to what he hoped to put into production.

As part of his speech, he remarked: 鈥淭here鈥檚 still a lot of work to be done to refine Optimus and prove it.鈥

But he went on: 鈥淚 think Optimus is going to be incredible in five or 10 years, like mind-blowing.鈥

Musk said existing humanoid robots were 鈥渕issing a brain鈥 and the ability to solve problems on their own, signalling that Tesla鈥檚 AI would be more independent, calling Optimus an听鈥渆xtremely capable robot鈥.
