Skin Analytics is a UK health tech company using artificial intelligence to detect skin cancer. Early detection remains one of the single biggest factors in skin cancer survival, yet dermatology capacity has not grown anywhere near as quickly as the number of patients being referred to dermatology services with suspected skin cancer. With less than 10% of referrals confirmed as high risk cancer, high-risk cases are waiting in the same queue as benign lesions. DERM assesses suspicious lesions and either marks them as benign or refers them on for specialist follow-up – giving patients faster answers without use of constrained specialist capacity – freeing hospitals from the cost and capacity demands of triaging thousands of benign lesions.
Founded in 2012 by Neil Daly, the company spent close to a decade working alongside the NHS to build and validate DERM before first deploying in the NHS in 2020. Since then, DERM has assessed more than 240,000 NHS patients and identified more than 20,000 skin cancers. It is currently live in 25 NHS hospital partners in primary and secondary care, as well as Bupa’s remote skin cancer assessment pathway.
DERM is the world’s first artificial intelligence as a medical device (AIaMD) certified to Class III under UK and EU medical device regulation – the highest level of scrutiny, normally reserved for devices such as pacemakers. Reaching that standard required years of prospective clinical studies, independent evaluations and continuous post-market surveillance. With that regulatory clearance, DERM is authorised to discharge patients without a dermatologist reviewing every case – it is cleared to make clinical decisions itself, safely and at scale.
That approach carried through to Skin Analytics newest capability, DERM Zero, launched in June 2026. DERM Zero brings the same Class III autonomous decision-making onto a standard smartphone camera, while still being deployed by healthcare providers. Translating a hospital-grade clinical device onto standard smartphone hardware, without lowering the regulatory bar, was a significant product development undertaking, and DERM Zero is the first technology of its kind to achieve it.
Skin cancer is among the most survivable cancers when caught early, and among the most dangerous when it is not, with 10 year survival rates dropping significantly when caught at a later stage – making it one of the clearest cases for what regulated AI as a medical device can achieve in healthcare. Skin Analytics stands as a best-in-class example of what happens when technology and regulatory rigour move in sync, having effectively set the regulatory bar that other autonomous AIaMD are now measured against. Further proof that AIaMD can be scaled into clinical use, with a measurable impact on patient outcomes.
Skin Analytics is now expanding across Europe, bringing AI skin cancer assessment to healthcare systems beyond the NHS, including international provider Affidea. The company has signed a partnership in Australia with Healthdirect and Infermedica to integrate DERM Zero into ChatGPT, subject to approval from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) – to make regulated, clinical-grade skin cancer checks accessible through the tools people already use every day.
